Local unemployment uptick continues as California ranks last in nation

For the fifth straight month, the unemployment rates in Stanislaus and Merced counties rose, according to preliminary data provided by the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD). Additionally, the state now has the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

According to the EDD, California had an unemployment rate of 5.6%, translating to over 1,027,000 individuals without a job, with 19,400 of those people in Stanislaus County and 14,500 in Merced County.

Modesto ranked second worst for traffic crashes among cities of similar size in California

Modesto was ranked the second worst for traffic crashes among its peer cities across the state, according to the latest rankings from the California Office of Traffic Safety, sustaining a trend since 2017.

The rankings look at about a dozen types of collisions, including drivers hitting pedestrians, fatal crashes, DUI crashes, hit-and-run and speed-related crashes.

Local roundup: Lodi golf third in DI, moves on to Masters

The Lodi High girls golf team placed third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament on Tuesday at Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville, securing a place at the section Masters tournament next Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Pleasant Grove won the team standings with a 379, followed by Granite Bay in second with a 387. The Masters takes the top six teams from Division I, and Oak Ridge (396), Folsom (428) and St. Francis (450) filled out those positions.

High school football rankings: Multiple top teams to match up in key league games

There were wins all over the board last week as the area’s Top 10 went 8-1.

Area No. 7 Hilmar returns from a Week 8 bye and immediately plays the biggest Trans-Valley League game of the year Friday against No. 6 Hughson.
