Turlock Man Gets 2-Year Prison Sentence For Striking Helicopter With Powerful Laser

TURLOCK (CBS13) — A Turlock man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for pointing a powerful laser at a Stanislaus County Sheriff helicopter.

The incident happened back in October 2017. According to the district attorney’s office, a sheriff’s office helicopter was hit five to six times by a green laser. Due to the interference, the air support response to a domestic violence call was disrupted.

Roger Shane John was arrested in connection to the incident. A laser that is 17-times more powerful than legally permissible for handheld laser devices was seized.

He has since pleaded guilty. On Monday, the DA’s office announced that the now 34-year-old John is being sentenced to two years and three months in prison. The prison sentence will then be followed by three years of supervised release.

Correctional officers confiscated hundreds of gallons of homemade alcohol from inmates at a California jail ahead of a Super Bowl party they were allegedly planning.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said the "illegally made jail house alcohol" had been found during a search at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California on Saturday.

Inmates at the jail hid had hundreds of gallons of the alcohol in garbage cans and other hideaway, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The sheriff's office posted a picture of 25 deputies standing in front of several bags of the confiscated alcohol, which they said was made from fruit and juice, on Instagram.

2 Northern California prisoners slain in related attacks minutes apart

SACRAMENTO  — Two inmates were killed during attacks a minute apart Wednesday in a Northern California prison, state corrections officials said.

The two afternoon attacks at California State Prison, Solano in Vacaville were believed to be related, according to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Two inmates stabbed Mizrain Nava Cano in the neck and back in a yard at the Sacramento-area prison shortly before 3:30 p.m.
