Turlock Library renovations in full swing

in People

Construction on Turlock’s new and expanded library has been zooming along and is expected to be completed by early spring of 2021.

Also nearing completion is an equally important fundraising project that aims to make sure that come the grand opening the new library is a truly stunning and innovative facility for the community.

The library project is renovating the old building and expanding the footprint at the current location on Minaret Avenue. In November 2019, the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors approved the project with a budget of $12.7 million and construction began in March.

Once completed the new library will be 16,530 square feet and will include larger collections for adults, teens and children, as well as new technology for the public to use. Additionally, the library will have several specialized rooms like a quiet reading room, a maker’s space, and a community room.

Library offers reading recommendations, story time kits

in Education

Stanislaus County Library staff have always offered reading recommendations and help finding materials of interest for customers, but COVID-19 has created a need to find creative new ways to highlight library materials.

Customers can now request personalized reading recommendations by completing a form on the library website. After answering a few questions about preferences, interests, and books and authors they’ve enjoyed, the form is sent to librarians for suggestions. Each request is forwarded to librarians with expertise in the areas requested by the customer.

“In recent months, fewer customers are asking for recommendations, but we still want to make people aware of the great collection the library offers,” said Reference Librarian Vicki Salinas, who created the Reading Recommendations Form. “Because people are unable to browse right now, this is also a way to highlight new materials.”

‘A little piece of normal.’ What you can still do through the Stanislaus County library

in Education

This time last year, librarian Amber O’Brien-Verhulst was popping Mentos into diet cola to demonstrate the kid-favorite, explosive scientific reaction to a captivated audience on the lawn of the Stanislaus County Library Modesto Branch.

This year, the pandemic halted in-person activities, but it hasn’t stopped the library from providing access to their services, books or other materials, though they’re mostly virtual.

“Our buildings are closed, but we are here,” said Sarah Dentan, County Librarian.

She said when the coronavirus hit, the library staff quickly pivoted their activities and services to online.

Good news for Turlock readers

in People

2020: Not a very good year so far. But there is ongoing activity in Turlock that should make everyone’s days a bit brighter.

The walls of the antiquated Turlock Public Library are in the process of being torn down and the remodeling and expansion of the 10,000 sq. ft. library to the new 17,000 sq. ft. has begun. The 52-year-old dinosaur that has served our community so well for so long will now be a state-of-the-art masterpiece that will make citizens of Turlock proud.

There will be an expanded teen section, an attached courtyard (with vegetation) more computer space and computers, rooms to reserve for studying, meeting rooms, a Friends of the Turlock Public Library Bookstore and a  large children’s center with a private fully functional bathroom just for the children and  so much more.

You can follow the remodeling progress online at the Friends of the Turlock Public Library or the Turlock Library on Facebook or on their websites. You may want to be more than a frequent user of the library. You may have ideas to share, you may want to volunteer. Go ahead. This is YOUR library. Go online and stay connected. Be part of Turlock’s new source of pride. See you in the Spring of 2021.

Stanislaus County opens ‘books for keeps’ library in lobby of Hackett Road facility

in Education/People

Two-year-old Aiden Jones from Turlock wasn’t interested in the county leaders’ speeches at The Book Club Opening Day on Wednesday.

Instead, he was enthralled with all the books in the new children’s library in the lobby of the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency on Hackett Road.

The goal of the library is to put a book in the hands of every child who visits county facilities. Parents and caregivers can read the books to their children while waiting for an appointment, and then they may take the books home.
