Local high school football player stays game ready after CIF announces sports delays

in Sports

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) – With the news that California Interscholastic Federation sports will be delayed and not canceled, student-athletes are gearing up for their chance to play again.

It’s the work Josiah Gonzales invests on and off the football field that he said has helped lead his team to victory.

“I thought this was going to be a perfect year for us, just how we were as a team, with the new quarterback that leads us,” Josiah told FOX40.

High schools nationwide ask athletes to sign coronavirus waivers in case they die

in Sports

High schools across America have a message for parents: If your kid gets sick and/or dies from coronavirus contracted during a voluntary extracurricular activity, you can’t sue us.

Several high schools, from California to Florida to Minnesota, have asked parents to sign liability waivers for kids starting summer activities.

In some places those activities, including everything from football two-a-days to band camp, have started as scheduled despite the increasing spread of coronavirus throughout much of the United States.

The waivers do not apply to fall classes. Districts have stressed this point, as the documents, which are still quite callous, have panicked parents.

Trump, Goodell Support Kaepernick’s NFL Return, How Does His Hometown Feel?

in Sports

TURLOCK (CBS13) — The Black Lives Matter movement is motivating organizations big and small to right past wrongs.

In pro sports, there’s been a complete reversal with the head of the NFL commenting that Colin Kaepernick should be welcomed back and signed to a team years after he was disowned for taking a knee during the national anthem.

But what does his hometown of Turlock think of it all? Papiola Aghassi, the owner of Jura’s Restaurant and Sports Bar has supported Kaepernick ever since he took a knee for the first time. Some in Turlock feel like attitudes are changing.

“Kapernick honestly knew something back then,” said Aghassi.

Aghassi has displayed jerseys with his name in her restaurants even during the tough times when so many critiqued his decision to take a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

Activist, gold medalist Tommie Smith to speak at Stanislaus State on Friday

in Sports

Tommie Smith said he still thinks about his “silent gesture” during the 1968 Olympics every day.

After Smith won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash and Team USA teammate John Carlos won the bronze, the two raised their fists during the award ceremony with the purpose of calling attention to racial disparity, especially toward African Americans in the United States.

“I am the 1968 Olympics,” Smith said.

Turlock High’s Everett Johnson was named Lineman of the Year by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Thirteen Stanislaus District football players were among those named to the first team or honorable mention by a committee of high school coaches representing the north and south regions — as well as small, medium and large schools — that make up the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Last month, Johnson signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of California.

The 6-foot-7, 312-pound Johnson will graduate Turlock and enroll at Cal on Jan. 16.

Lopez: How did I do with my preseason predictions? Well, not too bad

in Sports

Only one more night of high school football remains in the Stanislaus District as both Escalon and Ripon vie for CIF State titles on Saturday.

It has been another exciting year filled with games going down to the wire and unexpected breakout players.

Before Saturday, I thought I’d take a look at my preseason predictions, which were published on Aug. 22, the day before the start of the season.

I made predictions for each of the leagues in the Stanislaus District and correctly picked six of the eight winners.

MJC sneaks past American River to set up NorCal showdown with San Mateo

in Local Roundup/Sports

When Modesto Junior College freshman running back Payton Bass (Pitman) struggled for playing time early in the season, he didn’t pout and instead worked harder in practice and asked questions, coach Rusty Stivers said.

“I know I am a good player but it was hard (adjusting to college football) at first,” Bass said.

Against American River in a CCCAA NorCal semifinal on Saturday night at MJC, Bass had a career-high 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Pirates beat the Beavers, 35-28.

MJC (9-2) advanced to the NorCal championship game, where it will travel to face the College of San Mateo — a 21-0 winner over Fresno City College — at noon next Saturday. The winner will advance to the state title game against the Southern California champ on Dec. 14 in Bakersfield.

“Tonight was for my team and for the sophomores,” Bass said. “We had to work and it wasn’t an easy fight.”

Cal lands commitment from Connecticut lineman Jaedon Roberts

in Local Roundup/Sports

Jaedon Roberts kept his recruitment quiet until the end, and it remained that way even after it was over.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound two-way lineman from Avon (Conn.) Old Farms recently made his college choice, but he did it without fanfare or announcement.

“He committed to Cal,” Avon coach Pierce Brennan said. “I think they are getting an extremely twitched up kid who is 6-foot-3, 290 pounds. He’s sudden. He’s twitchy. He’s got grown man strength at 18 years old.”

Roberts committed to the Bears about a week ago. He will enroll at Cal in January, and Brennan believes that gives him a chance to play next fall, despite the challenges of competing at the line of scrimmage for true freshmen.

Sac-area football teams fall to powers from out of area; did that affect Bee rankings?

in Local Roundup/Sports

The thing about rankings is losses to quality teams do not equate to despair, nor do they hurt a team’s status come Sac-Joaquin Section playoff time.

Strength of schedules matter for our Bee rankings and those from our friends at publications such as Cal-Hi Sports, MaxPreps, NorCalPreps and others.

Capital Christian remains No. 4 in these rankings because it lost to a team that very well might have beaten everyone in this region, a 24-6 setback to state-ranked power Vista Murrieta.

Rocklin lost to Damonte Ranch of Reno, a state power in the Silver State, and remains firm in our rankings. Whitney fell at Central Section No. 1-ranked Central of Fresno, so no shame there. Same with Placer falling in the final seconds to storied Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa.

Football rankings: Week 2 Bay Area Preps HQ Top 25

in Local Roundup

De La Salle remained firmly atop the latest Bay Area Preps HQ Top 25 rankings despite losing to St. Thomas Aquinas 24-14 on Friday.

St. Thomas entered the game ranked No. 1 nationally by USA Today and De La Salle still has not lost to a Northern California team north of the Fresno area in 28 years.

Liberty is still No. 2, followed Valley Christian, Serra and Menlo-Atherton.

One team to slide was Rancho Cotate, which lost its opener Saturday night at Sacramento 24-6. The Santa Rosa school fell six spots, to No. 18.

The other to fall was Moreau Catholic, which went from No. 25 in the preseason rankings to on the outside looking in after a 20-19 loss to Del Norte-Crescent City.
