Your guide to the numerous Christmas parades, tree lightings and more across Modesto region

Goodbye Thanksgiving, hello Christmas — and by that, we mean pretty much immediately.

Communities across the Modesto and Mother Lode regions begin celebrating the yuletide season the day right after many of us stuff ourselves with turkey and dressing.

There are a pair of events set for that Friday, with plenty more festivals, parades, tree lightings and other events planned through the rest of November and well into December.

Turlock Moms Club celebrates year of philanthropy and fun

A year is officially in the books for the Turlock Moms Club, a 503(c) nonprofit whose mission is to provide a supportive network for local moms and fun activities for children through events and community service.

On Sunday, the club celebrated their year of work and looked towards their second year with their annual Fall Festival. The event, which included children's activities like gardening and face painting, offered an opportunity for community members to learn more about the club and their efforts.

Assyrian Festival returns to Turlock

The local Assyrian community will celebrate its rich traditions at the ninth annual Assyrian Festival on Sept. 16-17 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. 

Admission and parking are free.

“We really want to showcase the culture, food and dancing of the Assyrian people,” said festival co-chair Sweeny Youmaran. “But this festival is for the entire community, not just Assyrians. We want to be able to open up the festival to entire community and welcome them with open arms, and invite them to take part in all we have to offer.”

When Frank Jaramillo returned from a tour of duty with the 75th Airborne Rangers, his welcome home was far from friendly.

“I was yelled at, cussed at, had things thrown at me,” said the 73-year-old Madera resident after he was honored during the city’s Memorial Day celebration at Courthouse Park.

Modesto synagogue and chabad celebrate Hanukkah with public menorah lightings

Modesto’s Congregation Beth Shalom celebrated the third night of Hanukkah with a public menorah lighting outside the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto on Tuesday. Public lightings by CBS will continue through the region and end on the 25th.
