Families looking to beat the heatwave this week can cool off at the City of Turlock’s two aquatic playgrounds, which are open once more after the pandemic shut them down last summer. Turlock’s public pools are still closed to recreational swimmers due to COVID-19, though swim lessons are being hosted at Pitman High School. 

Turlock resident Aiden Struve and his family were at the Columbia Water Spray Park on Tuesday afternoon, much to his delight. Last year was the first time Struve wasn’t able to go to the spray park, he said, and he was overjoyed to be back under his favorite feature of the playground: the water-spilling coconuts.

Turlock High basketball says goodbye to longtime coach

The Turlock High School boys basketball program will look a bit different next season as its leader, Doug Cornfoot, retires from coaching the varsity team. 

After 15 years and three league championships, Cornfoot decided to hang it up following the COVID-shortened 2020 season, where the Bulldogs finished third in Central California Athletic League play with a 5-4 record. 

After 20 total years of coaching, which included five years at Delhi High School before he came to Turlock, Cornfoot noted that the decades had taken a toll on his body and resulted in many sleepless nights. The absence of summer ball last year helped him realize it was time to step back from the sport, he said.

Ceres High’s boys and girls water polo teams finished atop the Western Athletic Conference South Division standings this season.

“I’m proud of them,” head coach Stephen Dias said. “They played like a machine all season long. It was simply amazing. They were a fun team to coach.”

Ceres High’s girls team claimed the WAC title outright with a 14-9 victory at Los Banos on May 18.

The Bulldogs and Tigers compiled 7-1 and 6-2 records, respectively.

Ceres High (7-1) finished ahead of Los Banos, Johansen (2-5-1) and Pacheco (0-7-1).

“The girls are excited,” Dias said.

California’s mask mandate will come to an end on Tuesday, but there will still be some situations and places where face coverings are required.

The California Department of Public Health has updated the mask requirements to fall in line with the suggestions from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The new guidelines start Tuesday when the state’s COVID-19 tier system ends.

People who are fully vaccinated will not need to wear masks indoors or outdoors, except at the following locations: on public transportation, homeless and emergency shelters, correctional facilities, healthcare settings, including long term care facilities, and K-12 campuses and child care facilities.

Grant gets his gardening roots from his mother Amy Thorpe, who is the farm manager of Rising Sun Farm and Garden, a special education program for 18- to 22-year-olds operating on 18 acres in Stanislaus County.

More residents than ever are flocking to the Turlock Town Center for their shopping and dining needs thanks to its revitalization in recent years, and additional changes are on the way as some well-known businesses prepare to move into the growing retail hub. 

Although the grand opening of the center’s new anchor tenant, Smart & Final Extra! last summer seemingly marked the completion of a years-long effort to breathe new life into the shopping space, a restaurant shakeup is set to take place in the coming months as Mundo’s Latin Grill moves locations and others set up shop in the center as well.

Cereal drive to benefit local children

Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock is joining Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and Manteca for a cereal drive with a goal of impacting childhood hunger in the region.

The Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive aims to supply children with cereal over the summer months and will be allocated by Second Harvest of the Greater Valley. The drive kickoff started Monday and runs through June 14.

“We understand the health issues children face from hunger and poor nutrition,” said Warren Kirk, CEO of Doctors Medical Center. “This past year has been particularly devastating for families struggling with hunger, as the COVID-19 pandemic compounded extreme food shortages in many communities. We recognize the importance of beginning each day with a nutritious breakfast and, through this drive, hope to help many in our community struggling with food insecurity. We invite you to help kids stay healthy this summer.”

Turlock church 1 of 5 finalists for national agricultural grant

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) — Brook Baltazar is one of dozens of kids getting hands-on agricultural training as part of the Westside Ministries Food Literacy Program in Turlock. 

“This week, we’ve been out here every day at 8 a.m. just harvesting and picking the weeds,” Brook said. 

Founder Dr. JoLynn DiGrazia started the food literacy program at her church with her husband 22 years ago. 

“Starting kids as small children so they have an appreciation of growing plants and understanding a little bit more where their food comes from,” said Joseph DiGrazia.

Turlock marijuana grow targeted by Sheriff’s deputies in county-wide eradication effort

A Turlock property was one of over 60 outdoor and indoor illegal marijuana grows raided by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office last week as part of “Operation Green Day,” which saw nearly 20 different agencies come together for the department’s largest illicit cannabis eradication effort yet. 

The major, week-long operation was spearheaded largely by the Sheriff’s Office Community Resource Unit and took place after months of planning, with the Northern and Southern California Bureau of Cannabis Control teams sending their Cannabis Enforcement Unit to assist. The joint effort also included collaboration with others like Stanislaus County Public Works, whose Bobcats and tractors were needed to tear down the illegal grows, along with local water and power agencies, who helped determine if crops were using stolen utilities, to name a few.

The Bulldogs cruised to a 9-1 win against host Los Banos on May 26.

“I’m proud of everything we accomplished,” said Jackie Ruiz, who contributed at goalkeeper and forward during her final season at Ceres High. “I think we did a pretty good job from where we started. It was basically a brand-new team. We only had five returning starters.”
