Gas prices near $3.50 at some stations in Stanislaus area. More holiday travel is expected

As gasoline prices drop to their lowest level in more than a year, more people have travel plans for Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

According to the American Automobile Association , about 15 million California residents are expected to travel for the last two holidays of the year. That amount of travel will be the third highest in more than 20 years, based on AAA data.

Five Men, Six Days, and 34 Miles Across the Sierra Nevada

Picture the young man, after a hard day’s travel by foot and horse, jotting down a few words in his journal by the stub of a candle. It’s October of 1833, a searingly cold, snowy season in the Sierra Nevada.

California, along with the rest of the world, is in the grip of what will later be known as the Little Ice Age, a period of punishing temperatures that lasted from 1500 till 1880.
