Local wrestlers shine at Valley tournaments

Area wrestling programs were in action across the Central Valley over the weekend, with several grapplers placing and earning first-place medals.

Hilmar Boys at Westside Invitational in Firebaugh — It was a career week for Hilmar’s Cody Bray from Thursday through Saturday, who represented the Yellowjackets in the 219-pound weight division at the 2024 Westside Invitational in Firebaugh. Following a first-round bye, Bray pinned all four of his opponents to earn first-place in his class.

Prep basketball roundup: Gallo Invite Day 1 scores, local boys and girls teams play non-league games

The Mark Gallo Invitational at Central Catholic High School tipped off Tuesday with four games. Modesto’s Beyer, Central Catholic and Downey each earned wins on Day 1 of the tournament. Prince Major (30 points) and Reuben Lewis (27 points) each had impressive scoring nights to lead their teams to wins. Lewis sealed Downey’s first win this season with a pair of free throws.

Oregon has multiple champions, numerous finalists at prestigious Reno Worlds wrestling meet

Eleven Oregon high school wrestlers reached the finals last weekend at the 2023 World of Wrestling Reno Worlds, one of the top postseason tournaments on the West Coast.

West Albany senior Ariana Martinez, who capped a 45-0 high school season by winning a second state title at OSAA 6A/5A Girls 115 pounds, won the 18U 118 division in sudden-victory overtime, earning a 6-4 decision against Hawaii’s Kalina Hotema.

College roundup: Central Washington softball picks up a pair of wins in California

 Two dominant pitching performances carried Central Washington softball to a sweep on its first day at the Tournament of Champions in California.

Ashlee Laver threw a complete game shutout and Allie Thiessen's two-run double provided all the offense the Wildcats needed in a 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific.

Turlock, Hilmar wrestlers ready for new season

While league matchups won’t get underway until the new year, local wrestlers are already honing their skills at various regional tournaments. Turlock High is once again looking to earn a league title and send as many athletes as possible to Master’s and then State.

Down the way at Hilmar High, the Yellowjackets are light on athletes but hoping to put in the work to rebuilding its program.

Local roundup: Lodi golf third in DI, moves on to Masters

The Lodi High girls golf team placed third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament on Tuesday at Timber Creek Golf Course in Roseville, securing a place at the section Masters tournament next Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Pleasant Grove won the team standings with a 379, followed by Granite Bay in second with a 387. The Masters takes the top six teams from Division I, and Oak Ridge (396), Folsom (428) and St. Francis (450) filled out those positions.
