Turlock Guide / Moving to Turlock

Last updated

Downtown, the university area and the shopping district near Highway 99 offer different starting points for a home search. Before choosing a place in Turlock, compare the commute, the full monthly cost and the services assigned to that address.

Start with the household budget

Rent or a mortgage is only the first line. Add electricity, gas, water, sewer, garbage, internet, insurance, transportation and childcare. For a rental, ask about deposits, parking, pets and which utilities are included. For a purchase, add property taxes, insurance, maintenance and any association fees.

Summer cooling can make a noticeable difference. Ask about the air conditioner, insulation, shade and recent utility bills. Our housing and cost-of-living FAQ explains the local figures and their dates; compare those with the homes actually available when you move.

Choose a part of town to explore

  • Downtown: Main Street restaurants, independent shops, the farmers market and arts venues are close together. Check the parking arrangements and the walk from the particular home.
  • Older east Turlock: established streets around Canal Drive, East Avenue and the historic high school campus. Look closely at the condition and upkeep of older properties.
  • The university area: Stanislaus State, Monte Vista Avenue and Geer Road are useful landmarks if campus is part of your week. Check the actual route to class or work.
  • Northwest Turlock: shopping around Monte Vista and Countryside, residential streets near Walnut and Pitman High, and access to Highway 99. Test the busy intersections during your travel hours.
  • The Westside: West Main, Lander and surrounding blocks have longstanding markets, schools and family businesses. Trace your daily trips from the specific address.

Use Areas & Streets to explore the corridors. Visit a potential home in the daytime and evening, and make the work trip at the time you would normally travel.

Check the worksite before the commute

Food processing, logistics, healthcare, education and retail all matter to the local economy. Start with our profiles of Blue Diamond, Amazon’s MCE1 fulfillment center and Foster Farms. The Foster Farms profile explains the 2025 fresh-turkey closure and the continuing operation, so an old employer list can be misleading.

Gallo is a regional option with headquarters in Modesto; Hilmar Cheese is in Hilmar. Read the location, shift, pay and employment type on each current job listing. Our jobs FAQ links employer portals and workforce assistance. Include the return trip, fuel or fares, and childcare hours when comparing offers.

Work out the trip home, too

Our first-time Turlock Transit guide explains routes, fares, boarding and transfers. The Roger K. Fall Transit Center is the local bus hub. Published system hours are 6 a.m.–9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.–7 p.m. Saturdays; check the last bus at your stop before relying on it for a shift.

The train station is in Denair, even though it is called Turlock–Denair. The transit-center guide explains Amtrak, regional buses and arranging the ride to the station. For a Bay Area job, test the full commute against your required arrival and departure times before signing a lease.

Sort out schools, childcare and services

Confirm the school district and assigned school for the exact address. A Turlock mailing address alone does not settle enrollment. Use Schools & Childcare for boundary tools, registration, preschool, childcare assistance and after-school programs. School enrollment and a place in after-school care are separate arrangements.

Help & Local Services brings together electricity and gas connections, city utility accounts, garbage collection, healthcare, permits and problem reporting. Arrange service start dates before moving day and confirm which accounts the landlord keeps in their name.

A short moving checklist

  1. Before committing: compare the full monthly cost, visit the home, test the commute, and confirm school and childcare arrangements.
  2. Before moving day: arrange utility transfers, internet installation, insurance and the keys or access instructions.
  3. During the first week: confirm trash day, update your address, register for emergency alerts through the services guide, and save your regular bus timetable.
