The Turlock-Denair train station is in Denair. Its shared name is a useful introduction to the town: closely connected to Turlock, with a railroad history, school traditions and community institutions of its own.

Elmwood became Denair in 1907

Denair’s early names chart its growth. The Elmdale post office opened in 1898; land for the Elmwood School District was deeded in 1902. The town became Elmwood in 1904, then Denair on April 24, 1907, honoring local landowner and railroad man John Denair. The dates are recorded in the county’s community history.

The tracks explain why this community and Turlock developed separately. Southern Pacific established Turlock along its line in the 1870s. Santa Fe built farther east, and Denair grew beside that competing route. Amtrak selected the Santa Fe corridor for its San Joaquins service in 1974. The Amtrak station history connects those nineteenth-century decisions to the station passengers use today.

A school auditorium with a second life

Denair’s school centennial booklet begins with a one-room school in 1902: one teacher and five pupils. A larger, two-story school followed in 1907, but fire destroyed it in 1916. A new brick grammar school was completed in 1918.

Its attached classrooms and corridors were removed in the late 1950s. The auditorium survived and became the Gaslight Theater. A building that once brought students together later provided a stage for local performers. That surviving school space is one of Denair’s most tangible links to its early years; the booklet includes photographs of both generations of school buildings.

Using the Turlock-Denair station

The station is at 3800 Santa Fe Avenue. The service formerly called San Joaquins was renamed Gold Runner on November 3, 2025. Older timetables and local references may still use the earlier name. Use Amtrak’s station page and current booking information when planning a trip.

This is a small platform station with an outdoor shelter, rather than a staffed depot. Arrange your ticket before arriving. For the connection between the station and home, Turlock Transit’s On-Demand service serves Turlock and Denair. Book through its app or by calling (209) 668-5600; check the Denair service hours and allow time for a shared ride.

The festival, library and Main Street

The Denair Farm & Family Festival is held downtown on the second Saturday of September. The organizer’s site includes vendor information, a booth map and a farm-equipment contact. It is a good occasion to see how the surrounding agricultural community comes together. The 2026 festival was September 12; use the organizer’s next announcement for a future visit.

Who handles local services?

Denair is an unincorporated Stanislaus County community. The Denair Community Services District handles local water and sewer services and provides community-facility information. The Denair Municipal Advisory Council brings community concerns to the county Board of Supervisors; its agenda archive is useful for following local projects.
