Dust Bowl puts the brewery in view of the dinner table: production windows, food made with house beer and picnic-table seating outside. Behind the name is another local story—an Oklahoma family’s journey to California.

The Turlock location to visit today
The current Turlock Brewery & Taproom is at 3000 Fulkerth Road, Turlock. This is the brewery, full-service restaurant and Beer Garden that opened in 2016. The original downtown taproom has closed; its history appears below so you can distinguish the two.
The regular restaurant hours are Monday–Thursday, 4–9 p.m.; Friday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. For reservations or a question about your visit, use the location page or call 209-250-2043. Special-event hours appear on the company’s site.
Restaurant or Beer Garden?
They offer different ways to spend the evening. The restaurant suits a seated meal and takes reservations. The adjacent Beer Garden has communal picnic tables, lounge seating, an outdoor bar, cornhole and two bocce courts. It welcomes walk-ins and families. Dogs on leashes are allowed in the Beer Garden only, rather than inside the restaurant or on its patio.
The outdoor food truck has its own service hours. That matters if your plan is to arrive outside, order food there and stay for the games. Use the Beer Garden page for that schedule instead of assuming it matches the restaurant. Summer Thursday music is another reason people gather here, but the advertised series runs May through September.
Food with a local connection
The food menu linked by the Turlock taproom ranges from pizzas and burgers to salads, fish and chips, and shareable starters. A particularly local item is Squeakers: Hilmar cheese curds fried in Hops of Wrath beer batter. That combines a nearby dairy producer with Dust Bowl’s original IPA in one dish. Our Hilmar Cheese guide follows the dairy side of that connection.
Other examples show how the brewery carries into the kitchen: beer cheese accompanies pretzel sticks, and the Hot Honey pizza uses a stout-infused topping. The menu also lists a jackfruit burger on a vegan bun. These are useful choices to look for when a group wants more than the same burger all around; the current menu is the place to choose your meal.
A beer list broader than the strongest IPA
The taproom’s beer list includes lagers, pilsner, stout, sour beer and several IPA styles, as well as seltzers and nonalcoholic hop water. Taco Truck Lager and Hops of Wrath IPA give two familiar starting points. The styles and alcohol percentages on the live list are useful distinctions: a light lager and an imperial IPA can be very different orders.
If you are interested in the work behind the windows, the company offers brewery-tour inquiries covering ingredients through packaging. Arrange that separately from a restaurant reservation.
Why it is called Dust Bowl
According to the company’s family and brewery history, Brett Tate’s grandparents left Oklahoma during the hardships of the 1930s and eventually settled in California. The brand’s name comes from that family experience. Tate, a retired teacher and coach, later found brewer Don Oliver through a newspaper story about Oliver winning the 2006 Samuel Adams LongShot homebrew competition.
Dust Bowl produced its first beer, Hops of Wrath IPA, in May 2009. Brett Honoré joined Tate as a partner in 2010, and their first downtown taproom opened in August 2011. The larger Fulkerth brewery followed in July 2016. The progression took the business from brewing beer to giving people a place to see and taste what it made.
What happened to the downtown taproom?
The original location was 200 W. Main Street, Turlock. Dust Bowl closed it permanently in June 2020, consolidating its hometown operations at Fulkerth. The Journal’s closure report explains the shutdown’s effect on the smaller space and the company’s decision to focus on its larger property.
Nick Pedretti, the downtown taproom’s general manager for eight years, bought Latif’s in November 2019, according to Latif’s history.
Commonwealth Turlock now operates at that downtown address; its own history dates its opening to October 2021. It is a separate business. For today’s Dust Bowl visit, make your reservation at Fulkerth, or choose the Beer Garden for a more informal gathering. Browse the Shopping & Dining directory for other places to eat around town.
