Turlock Guide / Tuesday Flea Market

TUESDAYS ON EAST AVENUE

Turlock’s Tuesday flea market turns an ordinary weekday into a hunt through tools, clothing, household goods and unexpected finds. It is also a place to sell the things you no longer need. A little preparation—especially cash and an early start—makes the first visit easier.

Where and when

The Turlock Sales Yard — Tuesday Flea Market is at 2000 East Avenue, by South Johnson Road. The operator lists hours as Tuesday, 4 a.m.–4 p.m. Sellers start early; for a first browsing trip, aim for the morning rather than the final hour.

For a location or operating question, call (209) 667-4441. The market’s own website is the useful starting point for shoppers and vendors.

A long-running Turlock habit

The sales yard opened in 1938. A December 2018 feature in Stan State’s The Signal marked its 80th year and interviewed a longtime seller about the Tuesday crowd. The history helps explain why “the sales yard” and “the Tuesday flea market” are used for the same place.

The Turlock Journal’s earlier market reporting describes the range from used gardening tools to clothing and household odds and ends. That changing mix is the reason to browse: a flea market does not have a fixed department-store inventory.

What shoppers should know

  • Admission is free. The operator’s shopper information lists parking at $2 per vehicle.
  • Use the market lots. The smaller lot is west of the market, with an entrance at Johnson and Merritt. The larger lot is south, with entrances from South Johnson Road and East Avenue.
  • Bring cash, including small bills. Some vendors take digital payments or cards, but the operator says most take cash. There is an ATM in the office.
  • Look over used goods before buying. Check the condition, parts and size of an item, and agree on the price before paying. A bargain is more useful when it is something you can actually use.
  • Plan for outdoor walking. Bring sun protection and comfortable shoes. The operator allows friendly dogs on leashes, but specifically cautions about summer heat and animals that are uncomfortable in crowds.

Want to sell?

Use the operator’s vendor information and selling guidelines. Goods sellers are advised to arrive by 6 a.m.; spaces are assigned first come, first served. Bring your own tables and display supplies. The market provides the space.

Vendor vehicle entry is stopped from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Prepared-food vendors need county health approval and should arrange the required paperwork with the market. Selling a few household items and operating a food truck have different requirements.
