Cal Poly Students Use Drones To Study Elephant Seals

in Animals/Education/Students

Cal Poly researchers have a new tool to keep track of the local elephant seal population. The team consisting of graduate students, undergraduate volunteers and professors use drones to conduct their research during the seals’ current mating season.

The project began in 2017 but this is the first year they were able to incorporate drone images. The research team will begin to analyze drone images in March, once the breeding season has ended.

Kate Riordan is a graduate student in the Biological Sciences department and is a part of this research team. Like the rest of the team, Riordan helps to fly the drones and makes sure they don’t crash. She also helps weigh the baby seals and tags them in order to track where the seals will end up.

Why is Modesto councilman advocating downtown as home for roller skating rink?

in Community/Entertainment/Fun

Modesto Councilman Chris Ricci says he has an easy and relatively inexpensive way to draw more people downtown: The city could make it the home of a permanent outdoor roller skating rink.

He said the city could consider converting part of the parking lot at Modesto Centre Plaza for the rink. Part of the parking lot at the Modesto Library or other downtown parking lots also could be contenders, Ricci said.

“Skating creates community, and it’s a spectator sport,” the councilman said. “Ideally, it would be similar to the ice skating rink” that operates seasonally in the Centre Plaza parking lot and draws thousands to downtown over the holidays.

The Almond Blossom Cruise Is a Modesto Must

in Community/Fun

A FRUIT TREE, around February, has a knack for stopping any flower fan in their beauty-seeking tracks. After all, a person wants to pause and admire this painting-perfect sight, which includes barky limbs bursting with frilly pink blossoms (and when we say "pink," we mean just about every shade of pink a person can imagine). Where, though, can you go to see a profusion of pink-a-tude, and several trees, or even rows of trees, in full-on February splendor? Venturing to where such specimens are cultivated is one primo idea, a place like Modesto. So many Central Valley farms are at their showy best during the second month, so much so that Visit Modesto created a map for those visitors and locals eager to take an Almond Blossom Cruise.

Prep boys’ soccer: Liberty Ranch earns school’s first section championship

in School/Sports

On Tuesday night, after a long drive to Turlock High School for all parties, a long boys’ soccer game ensued. It took 100 minutes, including 20 of double overtime, but Liberty Ranch made all the work worthwhile with a 4-2 penalty kick win for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV boys’ soccer championship.

It was a scoreless affair with the defenses of both teams on the front foot and the attacks rarely getting shots.

Hawks coach Garrett Arechiga, coaching in his first postseason, delivered Liberty Ranch their first-ever title.

Daniel Sokolovsky has a Forrest Gump-like penchant for being wherever the action is in the world of delivery. In 2013, around the time of the rise of food delivery platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash, Sokolovsky was heading up his own food delivery business, Berkeley Delivers, near his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley.

Then, in 2015, he founded AxleHire, a company that would soon go toe-to-toe with one of delivery’s most influential and massive players. The company’s proprietary software helps clients create digital fleets of drivers and vehicles for use in their delivery operations.

“I spent like six to seven years proving a concept that at the time was only familiar to Amazon, you know? We were offering next-day delivery, we were offering same-day delivery,” Sokolovsky told Modern Shipper. “I ended up luckily foreseeing a few years ahead of time that this same-day, next-day, basically super quick e-commerce delivery would boom like crazy.”
